Know about suspicious activity the moment it happens. Most fraud is preventable if caught early.

Enable transaction alerts on every account you ownMost banks allow you to set thresholds (e.g., alert on any transaction over $50, or all transactions). Choose a low threshold. You want to know immediately. Enable login alerts on all bank and credit card accountsSet alerts to notify you whenever someone logs in from a new device or location. This catches unauthorized access before fraud happens. Set alerts for failed login attemptsMultiple failed login attempts often signal someone trying to break into your account. Alert on 3+ failed attempts in a row. Verify your phone number on all banking appsAlerts won't reach you if your phone number is wrong. Call your bank and confirm the phone number on file matches your current number. Set alerts for wire transfers, ACH transfers, and account changesThese are how criminals move money after breaking in. Know what your bank covers and what they don't. Federal protection doesn't cover everything.

Request your bank's fraud liability policy in writingCall your bank and ask them to send you their written fraud liability policy. Many people don't realize their bank has limits on coverage. Understand the FDIC $250,000 coverage limitFDIC covers deposits if your bank fails—not fraud. If someone drains your account fraudulently, you're not automatically reimbursed unless it's through specific fraud protection. Verify your bank covers online fraud (not just card fraud)Some banks only protect card-based fraud, not unauthorized wire transfers or ACH debits. Ask specifically about online account compromise. Log out of old devices in your banking appIn your banking app's security settings, you can see all devices logged in. Disconnect any old phones, tablets, or computers you no longer use. Review and update your recovery phone numbers and email addressesIf you get locked out, your bank uses these to verify you.
